What Is Sociocracy?
Sociocracy is a system of collaborative governance where decisions are made by consent, roles and responsibilities are clearly defined, and authority is distributed through circle structures. Rather than top-down control or majority voting, sociocracy ensures everyone’s voice matters and is heard before a decision is finalized. It fosters inclusive decision-making, accountability, and shared leadership.
When Did Sociocracy Appear?
Sociocracy originated in the mid-20th century, building on the ideas of Dutch educator Kees Boeke, and was later developed into a practical organizational method by Gerard Endenburg in the 1970s. Endenburg, an engineer and business leader, applied sociocratic principles in his company to create a more humane and effective workplace—blending systems thinking with real-world collaboration.
How Sociocracy Differs from Democracy and Autocracy
While democracy emphasizes majority rule and autocracy concentrates power in a single leader, sociocracy introduces consent decision-making. In sociocracy, decisions are not approved until no reasoned objection remains. This respects each person’s perspective while focusing on effectiveness and shared responsibility, avoiding the polarization often seen in other models.

Each circle has clearly defined sociocracy roles and responsibilities, with decision-making authority exercised when no objections exist. Double linking connects circles to ensure information flow and coherence across the whole organization.
Does Sociocracy Really Matter?
Yes—especially when people are tired of top-down control, siloed communication, or endless, ineffective meetings. Sociocracy brings real change by embedding equality (equivalence) and effectiveness into governance. It matters for organizations that want to be agile, inclusive, and resilient.
